Reporting a Concern or Complaint

The Irish Professional Private Investigators Association (IPPIA) is committed to the highest standards of professionalism, ethics, and legality. If you have a concern about the conduct of one of our members, you can be assured that we take all complaints seriously.

We are here to protect the interests of clients, investigators, and the general public by ensuring that all members adhere to our Code of Ethics and comply with applicable laws.

What Can Be Reported?

You may submit a complaint if you believe that a member has:

  • Acted unethically or unlawfully during an investigation
  • Violated client confidentiality
  • Misused the IPPIA name or logo
  • Misrepresented their qualifications or status
  • Breached data protection rules (GDPR / Irish Data Protection Act)
  • Engaged in intimidation, harassment, or discrimination

Who Can Submit a Complaint?

  • Clients of a private investigator
  • Members of the public
  • Fellow investigators
  • Regulatory or legal bodies

How to Submit a Complaint

Complaints must be:

  1. Submitted in writing (email or post)
  2. Include your full name, address, and contact details
  3. Detail the nature of the complaint, including relevant dates and facts
  4. Include any supporting documents, if available


All complaints are handled in strict confidence.

What Happens Next?

1. Acknowledgement

  • You will receive confirmation of your complaint within 14 days of receipt.


2. Ethics Committee Review

  • The case is reviewed by the Ethics Committee, which may contact you for further clarification.
  • The member in question is informed and given an opportunity to respond.


3. Investigation

  • If warranted, an inquiry is initiated.
  • A final decision is typically reached within 60 days, unless extended due to complexity.


4. Outcome

Possible actions include:

  • Formal warning
  • Suspension of membership
  • Expulsion from IPPIA
  • Referral to the PSA or other relevant authority


5. Right of Appeal

  • The member (or complainant, in some cases) may request an appeal within 30 days.
  • A neutral panel or independent arbitrator will review the case.

  • All investigations are conducted impartially and respectfully.
  • We do not retaliate against those who raise genuine concerns.
  • Both complainants and members are treated with dignity throughout the process.
